Texas ranks 23rd in divorce percentages

Divorce rates are an often contested figure. The most commonly reported figure is that 50% of marriages end in divorce, but this isn’t necessarily true. It just gets repeated so often because it’s a simple statistic to remember and it has been stated for decades.

One way to look at how common divorce actually is is simply to consider the percentage of a population that is divorced. When you do this, you can also rank the states to see where divorce is most likely. How does Texas stack up when you do this?

Texas is very average

Studies show that there are some outlier states, like Maine, where 14% of the population is divorced. On the other side of the spectrum, you have states like California, where it’s as low as 9%.

Texas itself is very close to the middle. With an 11% figure, Texas ranks 23rd out of 50 states in the country. It’s also worth noting that the average for America as a whole is just under 12%. So not only does Texas rank in the middle when you look at the numbers for each state, but it also ranks very close to the national average.

Are you getting a divorce?

What this means is that divorce is certainly a reality for many couples in Texas. The rate might be slightly lower than the national average, but this is clearly something that happens with a fair amount of frequency. That’s why it’s so important for all couples to know exactly what legal steps they should take if they do decide to get a divorce.
